How to Remake an IDSU's Pairing Key

How to Remake an IDSU's Pairing Key

Obtaining the E01 MAC Address

To complete the pairing process, you will need to obtain the E01 MAC address from your AvaLAN IDSU. This can be found on a sticker located inside the device, adjacent to the Cloud ID sticker. Please ensure that you note down this information, as it will be required for the configuration file in Step 4.

Once you have completed this setup process, follow the steps outlined below to remake the IDSU pairing key:

Step 1: Prepare a New USB Device as the Pairing Key

Insert the USB drive into your PC or laptop. This USB will serve as the new pairing key for the AvaLAN IDSU.

Step 2: Format the USB Drive to FAT32 or EXT3

The USB drive must be formatted to a compatible file system. In order to format the USB drive, please follow these steps:

  1. Open File Explorer and locate the USB drive.
  2. Right-click on the USB drive in File Explorer to open a dropdown menu.
  3. Select the "Format" option from the menu.
  4. A new window will appear, prompting you for options to format the USB.
  5. Under "File system", click the dropdown arrow and choose "FAT32". If FAT32 is not available, proceed with formatting to EXT3 instead.
  6. Ensure the "Quick Format" checkbox is checked.
  7. Click the "Start" button to initiate the formatting process.

A progress bar will display the status of the format operation. Once complete, you can close the window.

Step 3: Create the key.cfg file

To create the key configuration file, simply go to https://avalan.com/keymaker make the key.
Once the you download the key.cfg file, copy and paste it into the USB.

note: If you downloaded multiple key.cfg files and they show up as key.cfg(1) or key.cfg(2), then you will have to rename them to key.cfg.

Step 4: Complete the Pairing Process

Eject the USB device from the PC/Laptop and use the USB to pair the IDSU to the AP. If you are unsure how to pair the IDSU to the AP,  follow the instructions in the "IDSU Pairing Process" knowledge base article.

The Old way to make the key.cfg file:

Create a New Text Document on the USB Drive

To create the key configuration file, follow these steps:

  1. Open the formatted USB drive in File Explorer.
  2. Right-click on an empty area within the drive to open a dropdown menu.
  3. Hover over the "New" option to reveal additional choices within the menu.
  4. Select the "Text Document" option from the expanded menu (if Text Document is not available you can choose a "Microsoft Word document").

Configure the Key Configuration File

Once you have created the "New Text Document.txt" (or "New Microsoft Word Document.docx"), rename it to "key.cfg".

Configure the Key Configuration File with the IDSU's MAC Address

Open the key.cfg file using a text editor such as Notepad. Enter the first four digits of the IDSU's E01 MAC address, followed by a comma, and then the last four digits of the MAC address. For example, if the E01 MAC address is 2C:C8:1B:96:60:BE, enter "2CC8,60BE".
