IDSU Pairing Process

To pair the AvaLAN IDSU with the in-store AP, please follow the steps outlined below. In the event that your experience deviates from the described process, please refer to our Troubleshooting Guide below for assistance. Alternatively, feel free to contact our support team directly at (650) 384-0000.

Step 1: Power On and Initialize IDSU and In-Store AP

Before proceeding with the pairing process, ensure that both devices are properly powered on.

  • IDSU: Turn on the IDSU by plugging it in. Verify that the device is functioning correctly by checking for lights on the top of the unit. The lights should illuminate upon boot-up. To facilitate optimal pairing, position the IDSU at least 10 feet away from the In-Store AP.
  • In-Store AP: Ensure the In-Store AP is powered on. This can be achieved in one of two ways:
    • Using the Power Over Ethernet (PoE) adapter provided, plug the In-Store AP into a compatible PoE switch or injector. Verify that the device is functioning correctly by checking for illuminated lights on the front of the unit.
    • Directly plugging in the In-Store AP using the included power supply unit. Connect the power supply to the designated power input on the In-Store AP and verify that it is operational by checking for illuminated lights on the front of the device.

Step 2: Unlock the In-Store Access Point (AP)

Insert the black pairing key into the AP's USB slot and wait for approximately 3 seconds. The AP will emit a distinctive success tone, indicating that it is unlocked and ready for pairing.

Step 3: Confirm AP Unlock Status

Remove the black pairing key from the AP. The unit will then emit three consecutive beeps with a brief pause in between, followed by another series of beeps. This repeating pattern will continue for up to 35 seconds, confirming that the AP is unlocked and available for pairing.

Step 4: Pair the IDSU

Within the 35-second window, insert the red pairing key from the In Dispenser Unit (IDSU) into the AP's USB slot. The AP will respond with two consecutive beeps followed by a brief pause, indicating that it is attempting to pair with the IDSU. This process can take up to 1 minute and 20 seconds.

Step 5: Verify Successful Pairing

Listen for a success tone from the AP. Once the tone is emitted, remove the red pairing key from the AP.

Step 6: Complete Additional Pairings (If Applicable)

The AP will continue to emit three consecutive beeps with a brief pause for an additional 10 seconds after the red IDSU pairing key is removed. This will allow you to pair another IDSU without requiring further unlocking of the AP. If you have multiple IDSUs to pair, repeat steps 3 and 4 until all units are successfully paired.

Step 7: Verify Connectivity and Signal Strength

After completing the pairing process, verify that each IDSU is successfully connected to the In-Store AP by checking the signal strength indicators.

  • Signal Strength Lights: Locate the three green lights on the left side of the front each IDSU. Each unit should display at least one illuminated light, indicating a minimum signal strength (e.g., Signal Low). Verify that all IDSUs are displaying at least this level of signal strength.
  • Site Survey Mode: Alternatively, put the In-Store AP into Site Survey mode to confirm connectivity with all paired IDSUs. For more information on using Site Survey mode and understanding Wireless AP Beep Codes, please refer to the "Wireless AP Beep Codes" Knowledge base article.

Troubleshooting

If one or more IDSUs are not connected to the In-Store AP and you did not receive a failure tone during pairing, proceed to the IDSU Pairing Lost section of the Troubleshooting Guide below for further assistance.

Troubleshooting Guide: AvaLAN IDSU Pairing Issues

Issue 1: Bad AP Pairing Key

If the in-store Access Point (AP) fails to produce a success tone after 3 seconds when attempting to unlock it with the black pairing key, and instead emits the version chime at 15 seconds, it may indicate that either:

  • The incorrect black AP pairing key was inserted. Try using the other provided pairing key.
  • The black pairing key is faulty. In this case, try using the other provided pairing key. If both black pairing keys are faulty the AP will need to be replaced.

Issue 2: Bad IDSU Pairing Key

If the red IDSU pairing key fails to trigger a response from the in-store AP (i.e., the AP remains silent instead of emitting two beeps), it may indicate that:

  • The IDSU's pairing key is not recognized by the AP. To resolve this issue, you will need to remake the IDSU's pairing key. Refer to our knowledge base article: "How to Remake an IDSU's Pairing Key" for instructions.

Issue 3: Failure Tone

If a failure tone is emitted instead of a success tone after attempting to pair the IDSU with the AP, it may indicate that:

  • The IDSU is not powered on. Simply provide power to the unit.
  • The AP does not have a strong enough connection to the IDSU. To resolve this issue, you can:

Issue 4: IDSU Pairing Lost

If a success tone is emitted after pairing the IDSU with the AP, but the IDSU's signal strength lights do not indicate a connection, it may be due to:

  • A temporary issue that can be resolved by attempting to pair the IDSU again twice, back-to-back. If this persists, you may need to replace the IDSU with a new one.

In any case where you're unable to resolve an issue using this Troubleshooting Guide, please don't hesitate to contact our support team at (650) 384-0000 for further assistance.
